Painting has always been a passion for Susannah. She grew up in the small beautiful town of Gramling, South Carolina. She attended Converse College as an art major. She spent one of her college summers studying with the University of Georgia in Cortona, Italy. It was in Cortona that she became certain that being an artist was her life's calling. She returned to Converse and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Painting in oil was the emphasis of her study in the fine arts department ,as well as, the focus of her senior show.
After moving to Charleston in the early 90's, Susannah showed her work in Unity Gallery. At this point her focus was primarily on architectural landscape and still life paintings. She also exhibited for seven years in Piccolo Spoleto. On her final year she won the Mayor's top award for "Best in Show".
Over the years, Susannah has had the opportunity to study under many master painters in both the Tuscany and Umbria regions of Italy as well as in San Miguel, Mexico. She also studied in the midwest of the United States with Russian impressionist painter
Ovanas Bervarian. Summer 2013 she will be studying with master painter
John W Skelcher in Le Marche, Italy.
After having children Susannah focused on commissioned works and enjoyed having an annual show in New York City. During those years she grew to love the figure. Eventually and to this day she has become dedicated to portrait painting. Pulling the likeness of a person from a blank canvas is her joy... therefore the primary focus of her work.
