Born in 1942 in Seattle, McCaw studied at the San Francisco Academy of Art and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Early inspiration from Joaquin Sorolla’s masterful handling of light and design gave way to deeper influences from Vuillard, Bonnard, Klimt, and the Abstract Expressionists. The result is a distinctive body of work that moves fluidly between romantic impressionism and raw expressionism, always placing personal statement above literal depiction.
McCaw approaches painting much like a sculptor works with clay—pushing, scraping, building, and removing material until something unexpected emerges. “I am drawn to abstract design, texture, and the physical application of paint,” he explains. “The surface remains malleable throughout the process… The paint itself becomes part of the subject. Its weight, texture, and history contribute as much to the meaning of the work as the imagery it describes.”
Design is his primary concern: how shapes connect, how forms create visual rhythm akin to music. Figures often emerge from these abstract relationships rather than dominating them. In his ongoing Validation series, the figure serves as a universal symbol of the human condition—vulnerable, searching, suspended between concealment and self-expression. McCaw deliberately leaves much of the narrative unresolved, creating space for viewers to bring their own experiences and emotions. “The work is not complete,” he says, “until someone stands before it and finds a reflection of something within themselves.”
A classic example of an artist whose strong mark making needs no signature, McCaw’s vigorous strokes and textured surfaces carry his unmistakable hand.
